This happened to Raj a few years ago, on a quiet winter evening. He was driving home after visiting a friend who lived on the outskirts of town. The night was calm, and the road ahead stretched out endlessly, illuminated only by the faint glow of his headlights.
As he neared the bend of a rural road, Raj spotted a lone man standing by the side, waving him down. The man looked normal enough—tall, wearing an old coat, and carrying a small bag. Thinking he might be in trouble, Raj pulled over.
The man approached the car, his face partially hidden under the hood of his coat. “Thanks for stopping,” he said. “Can you give me a ride to the next town?”
Raj hesitated for a moment but decided to help. The man climbed into the passenger seat, setting his bag between his feet. The drive began in silence. Raj tried to make small talk, asking where the man was headed, but his answers were curt and strange. He seemed distracted, his eyes fixed on the road ahead.
After ten minutes, Raj noticed an awful smell filling the car—a mix of damp earth and decay. He glanced at the man, who sat motionless, his face now completely hidden under his hood. Feeling uneasy, Raj decided to pull into the next gas station, but before he could say anything, the man broke the silence.
“Take the next left,” the stranger said, his voice suddenly deeper and cold.
Raj knew there was no road to the left—it was just a field. Panic surged through him as he pretended not to hear and drove straight ahead. That’s when the man snapped, turning to face Raj fully. His face wasn’t human. The eyes were sunken, the mouth twisted unnaturally, and the skin gray and lifeless.
Terrified, Raj slammed the brakes. When he turned to look again, the passenger seat was empty. The smell lingered, but the man was gone, his bag left behind. Raj didn’t dare touch it. He sped off, not stopping until he reached his home.
The next morning, Raj found the bag in his car. Inside was an old, withered photograph of the same man standing by the roadside—but it looked decades old. His friend later told him that man had died on that very stretch of road 15 years earlier.
