It was late October, just days before Halloween, when Mike decided to drive back to his hometown to visit his family. The route was familiar—long stretches of empty highway and a shortcut through an old backroad called Black Hollow. Everyone knew Black Hollow Road had its stories, but to Mike, they were just that—stories.
The road was pitch black as he entered the wooded stretch. His headlights barely cut through the thick darkness, and the towering trees on either side seemed to press in closer the further he drove. Halfway through, his radio crackled to life—a static-filled noise that shouldn’t have been there. He turned it off, only to hear faint whispers coming from the speakers. Thinking it was some interference, he ignored it.
A few minutes later, he saw something—or someone—standing at the edge of the road. His heart jumped. It looked like a woman, her hair covering her face, her figure pale under the dim light of the moon. Mike slammed on the brakes, and his car skidded to a stop.
She didn’t move.
Shaking, he rolled down his window just slightly and called out, “Are you okay? Do you need help?” But as the words left his mouth, she disappeared—just vanished into thin air.
Mike didn’t wait to see what would happen next. He hit the gas and sped down Black Hollow as fast as he could. But no matter how far he drove, the woman kept appearing at the side of the road, closer each time. He was panicking now, gripping the wheel until his knuckles turned white.
Just as he neared the end of the road, she appeared directly in front of his car. He swerved, narrowly missing her, and crashed into a tree. When he opened his eyes, bruised and shaken, there was no sign of her. But his rearview mirror told a different story—there she was, sitting in his back seat, her empty eyes staring back at him.
Mike doesn’t take shortcuts anymore.
