The Humming in the Woods: A Hiker’s Frightening Encounter

Humming in Woods Frightening Encounter sent by Sarah from Torronto.

It was early spring in 2007 when Sarah and her two best friends, Liz and Matt, decided to spend the weekend hiking in the Smoky Mountains, Tennessee. The weather was perfect, and they were eager to escape the city and connect with nature. Their plan was simple: hike out to a remote clearing, camp overnight, and hike back the next day.

By late afternoon, they reached their campsite, a quiet spot surrounded by trees and just out of view of a nearby stream. They set up their tent, had a quick dinner, and settled in for the evening. The woods were serene, the kind of quiet that feels peaceful during the day—but unnervingly still at night.

Around midnight, Sarah woke up to the faint sound of someone humming. She lay there, trying to make sense of it. It wasn’t Liz or Matt—they were both fast asleep. Quietly, she unzipped the tent just enough to peek outside. The forest was dark, but she could still hear it: a low, melodic humming, coming from deeper in the woods. She wanted to wake the others but didn’t want to seem paranoid, so she convinced herself it was probably the wind.

The next morning, she told Liz and Matt about it. Matt shrugged it off, teasing her for being spooked by “forest music,” but Liz looked uneasy. She admitted she’d had a weird dream about a woman humming outside the tent. They laughed it off and continued their hike.

That night, the humming returned. This time, it was louder. It didn’t sound random—it sounded deliberate, like a tune someone would hum while wandering. Matt sat up, wide-eyed, as he finally heard it too. The three of them huddled together, whispering about what to do. Then, the humming stopped.

They all froze as they heard something else: footsteps, slow and deliberate, crunching leaves just outside their tent. Sarah was trembling now. “Who’s there?” she shouted. No answer.

After what felt like an eternity, the footsteps faded into the distance. They didn’t sleep that night, and as soon as the sun rose, they packed up and left in a hurry.

Weeks later, Sarah stumbled upon an old article online about hikers disappearing in that area back in the 1970s. Witnesses had claimed to hear humming in the woods before the disappearances. Sarah never went camping again.
