It was the fall of 2015 when Nadia moved into an old apartment building downtown. It wasn’t anything fancy—just affordable and close to her new job. The landlord had mentioned the place had “character,” which she later came to understand was code for creaky floors, dim lighting, and the occasional chill that made the hair on the back of her neck stand up.
The weirdness started small. Late at night, she’d hear faint knocking sounds on the walls, always in threes. She convinced herself it was just the pipes. But things escalated the night she unpacked a large mirror she’d inherited from her grandmother—a heavy, ornate antique she hung above her dresser.
That night, Nadia woke up suddenly, her room deathly cold. She reached for her phone to check the time—3:33 a.m. As she turned over to face the mirror, she froze. There was something in the reflection.
It looked like her at first—but the more she stared, the more wrong it seemed. The “reflection” tilted its head and smiled in a way no human ever should. It wasn’t her smile. Slowly, it raised a hand to the glass, and she swore she felt icy fingers brush her cheek.
Terrified, she leapt out of bed, yanked the mirror off the wall, and shoved it into her closet. For the rest of the night, she slept with the lights on.
The next morning, she asked the landlord if he knew anything about the mirror. His face turned pale as he whispered, “That thing belonged to the old tenant. She used to complain about seeing…things in it. I thought we got rid of it when she moved out—before she, well…disappeared.”
Nadia didn’t stay long after that. The mirror? She left it behind when she moved.
